PHILIPSBURG – The government has decreed upcoming Thursday, exactly one year after hurricane Irma, as the National Day of Reflection. Except for 2 minutes of silence to be held at 09:06 local time (the exact time the eye of the hurricane crossed over the island), next to nothing has been planned. A lot of citizens don’t know about it, or don’t care.
There is no official remembrance program according to State Secretary Raymond Knops. For this reason he has not changed his working visit schedule, and will be on Bonaire on Thursday. “I think people would appreciate it more if I come here more often during the year to do good things, than to just be here at 09:06 on September 6th.”
