WILLEMSTAD – In the Curaçaoan neighborhood Otrobanda, several community gardens are being created by the inhabitants. They’re working together to grow fruits and vegetables for other neighbors.

“We started handing out food packages during COVID-19. We see that there is a need for that but at the same time we realize that we can’t keep on handing out food packages forever”, says Kurt Schoop. He’s involved with the project on behalf of the ‘Kaya Kaya’ initiative.
Self-sufficiency
The community gardens are a brain child of organizations ‘Kaya Kaya’ and Fundashon Ser’i Otrobanda. Both initiatives help local residents find each other and improve their neighborhood. “We’re trying to be self-sufficient by helping people grow their own fruits and vegetables”, says Schoop.
