KRALENDIJK — The court has sentenced Anthony W. and Rudolfo v. H. to 28 years and 21 years in prison, respectively, for the murder of Sheldon Johnson. With this ruling, the court completely agreed with the sentences requested by the Public Prosecutor’s Office. The two convicted men showed no emotion when the verdict was read.
Inside the courtroom, however, the atmosphere was highly emotional. When the judge announced the sentences, Johnson’s family and loved ones burst into tears. “We will never get Sheldon back, but justice has prevailed,” they said emotionally afterward. Family and friends on Saba and Sint Maarten followed the ruling through a live video connection.
From denial to conviction
From the very beginning, W. and V. H. denied any involvement. They maintained that they had only seen a mysterious ‘shadow man’ running away and that they had nothing to do with the shooting. Their lawyer argued that the case file consisted mostly of suspicions. The court completely disagreed. Four central questions had to be answered: was the ‘shadow man’ the shooter, was W. that person, what was the role of V. H., and was the murder planned in advance premeditated?
According to the judge, camera footage combined with forensic evidence left no room for any other conclusion. The so-called ‘shadow man’ was W. Gunshot residue was found on his clothes, backpack, and glove. The court found no believable alternative explanation for this.
Full accomplice
The court also found that V. H. played a much larger role than he wants to make it appear. The judge determined that both men acted together, watched the victim, and coordinated their actions. Because of this, V. H. did not just help afterward, but was a full accomplice to the murder.
W. was also convicted of the attempted murder of Carti, Johnson’s partner, and for possession of cocaine.
The court used harsh words during the sentencing. Sheldon Johnson was ‘cowardly’ shot in the back, after which the suspects tried to hide the truth, according to the court. The judge emphasized the permanent pain the murder has caused for his partner, family, friends, and the entire community of Saba.
Compensation for damages
The family’s claims for emotional damages were declared inadmissible. The Caribbean Netherlands still does not have a law that allows family members to get financial compensation for emotional distress in criminal cases. The family can still start a civil lawsuit for this.
Carti was awarded 5,000 dollars in compensation. The rest of her financial claim was also declared inadmissible and can only be handled by a civil court.
Anthony W. and Rudolfo v. H. have fourteen days to appeal the court’s decision.

MOVING ON – LIVING WITH THE LOSS OF SHELDON JOHNSON
Written by Hazel Durand
How does a mother move on after losing her son? For Nancy Durand (59), the answer is simple: you never truly do. Months after the death of her son, Sheldon Johnson (34), she still finds herself asking the same question: “Why is he dead?” In the days leading up to the announcement of the court’s verdict, Hazel Durand (for Caribbean Network) spoke with her cousin Nancy Durand about her grief, her search for peace, and the strength she has found in the process. The following is a summary of her reflections.
“Losing Sheldon shattered my world,” Durand said. “When I received the phone call, I never imagined he was gone. I kept believing he had only been injured and that I would see him at the hospital.” Instead, she was stopped by police and prevented from getting to her son. “The greatest pain, was not being able to hold him, comfort him or say goodbye,” she recalled. “I didn’t see him again until two weeks later, after he had been returned home.”
That pain, she says, has never left her. Every Friday reminds her of the last time they spoke. She still catches herself looking for him, expecting to see him standing where he once stood. The silence his absence has left behind remains overwhelming.
Choosing to remain strong
Despite her grief, Durand made a conscious decision not to allow anger to consume her family. She said she chose to remain strong for her children and grandchildren because she feared that giving in to rage could lead them to seek revenge. “Sheldon would not have wanted that,” she said. Instead, she has tried to honor his memory by encouraging peace, forgiveness and compassion, even as she continues to mourn him every day.
The criminal proceedings have also been difficult. Each court hearing reopened the emotional wounds left by her son’s death. Seeing those accused in the case, she said, has been deeply painful and has often left her feeling unheard and powerless throughout the justice process.
Hope for peace over violence
Although some time has passed, she says the loss remains as profound as ever. “I miss Sheldon every single day,” she said. “He was not only my son – he belonged to our entire community.”
She hopes that, in the end, something meaningful can come from the tragedy. “My greatest hope is that his death will inspire others to choose peace over violence,” she said. “So that no other mother has to endure the pain of losing a child in this way.”

MURDER CASE SHELDON JOHNSON: STATEMENT FROM FIRE CHIEF JULIO EVERY
Written by Hazel Durand
“As the local Fire Chief from Saba, I can say that both my team and I are pleased with the outcome that the judge handed down to the two individuals responsible for Sheldon’s murder. While no number of years behind bars will ever bring Sheldon back or heal the pain his family, friends, team members, and our community continue to feel, we are grateful that justice has been served. We are especially relieved that they will now have time to reflect on the devastating consequences of their actions and the tremendous loss they have caused. What was taken from Saba cannot be replaced. Sheldon was a valued member of our community, and his absence is felt every day. Although this sentence cannot undo what happened, it does provide a measure of accountability and justice for the life that was taken and the many lives that are forever changed. Our thoughts remain with Sheldon’s family, loved ones, friends, and colleagues. We will continue to remember him and honor his contribution to the team.”
